My experience in educational programming
Working as a Disney Youth Education Series Facilitator
Disney’s Youth Education Series offers student programming that connects education standards to the development and operation of Disney theme parks and resorts.
During my time as a facilitator, I led student groups in grades 3rd-12th on programs focused on the application of science in the Walt Disney World theme parks. Lessons were structured around a variety of questioning techniques that encouraged student participation and critical thinking. I had several opportunities to work with student groups comprised of English Language Learners from around the globe. These experiences challenged me to adapt lesson content to meet their specific needs and learning goals. Training took place over an intensive one month period that encompassed both content knowledge and teaching strategies.
Interning at the Japan-America Society of Washington DC
This internship introduced me to a wide variety of roles and tasks underneath the umbrella of educational programming. I supported the organization’s Japan-in-a-Suitcase program, a traveling assembly opportunity to introduce students to Japanese culture. During these events, I assisted with presenting to groups of up to 60 students at a time using interactive presentations, games, and crafts.
I also had the opportunity to lead a roundtable discussion between Japanese, Chinese, and American college students to promote understanding between cultures.
On a typical day in the office, I created educational content for social media such as “Word of the Day,” a daily Japanese vocabulary lesson on Instagram, and “Weekly Nihongo,” a weekly Japanese grammar lesson on Facebook.
Interning at the Pablove Foundation
The Pablove Foundation is a non-profit that focuses on childhood cancer research and arts education for children with life-threatening illnesses. My internship was within the Shutterbugs program department, which offers photography classes and mentorship for children battling cancer in 7 cities across America.
I assisted with executing photography classes for 20 students at the Getty Center by preparing course materials, organizing teacher training manuals, and being available to help students complete their projects.
